The network was built so that software exports do not depend on a handful of urban clusters. Fourteen directorates carry the statutory work; fifty-nine sub-centres take it to Tier-II and Tier-III cities.

The STPI journey

From one export promotion society in 1991 to a network of 73 centres.

  1. 1991

    STPI established

    Set up as an autonomous society under the Department of Electronics to promote software exports.

  2. 1992

    First centres begin work

    Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad and Noida start registering units under the STP scheme.

  3. 1998

    Datacom gateway licensed

    STPI becomes one of the first providers of dedicated international bandwidth to the software industry.

  4. 2009

    Softex filing moves online

    Export declarations are filed electronically, cutting certification time for registered units.

  5. 2016

    Electropreneur Park opens

    India's first ESDM incubator opens in Delhi and begins the Centre of Entrepreneurship programme.

  6. 2020

    EMC 2.0 and NGIS begin

    STPI takes on the electronics cluster scheme and the Next Generation Incubation Scheme for MeitY.
